Sheffield Wednesday have, finally, appointed a new manager following the departure of Steve Bruce to Middlesbrough. Former Swansea City, Leeds United, Middlesbrough and Birmingham City boss Garry Monk has taken over at Hillsborough. The length of Monk’s deal has not been disclosed by the club.
Garry Monk Appointed as New Sheffield Wednesday Manager
Championship Experience
Monk started off his managerial career with Swansea, taking the job on a permanent basis after an initial interim role. His time with the Swans alerted suitors from the Championship, and that is where he has spent the majority of his career since.
A successful spell at Leeds saw him take the side to just shy of a play-off spot, but he resigned from the club before joining Middlesbrough. His time at the Riverside was to be short-lived, however, and he left the club in December 2017.
St Andrews proved to be where Monk would find his next job, and he worked wonders with Birmingham’s small budget. After successfully steering them away from relegation, he guided Birmingham initially to a top ten finish. This would have landed the Blues just outside the play-offs, but a nine-point deduction put them in threat of the drop.
He now takes charge of Wednesday at the start of the international break, meaning he has nine days to get to know his squad before leading them out at the John Smiths Stadium against Huddersfield Town on September 15.

“My overriding feeling is excitement and seeing what we can do here. We know we have a capable squad and it’s about making us compete as hard as we can and then the quality will come through.
“I’m looking forward to working with Lee (Bullen) and some of the other staff here and their expertise is invaluable. I’ve already had a good chat with them and we will get to work.”
