The Statement

In the statement released, Cattermole said: “Sunderland is a special club and this decision has not been easy, but I believe it is the right time to find a new challenge. The football club, over my 10 years, has had some fantastic managers, staff and players and I have been lucky to be part of that.”

“I would like to say a big thank you to Jack Ross and his staff, and I wish him and the current squad all the best for the coming season. There are some exciting young players at the club and I will be looking forward to seeing them progress. And finally, and most importantly, the fans.

“You are what makes the club special and your passion and commitment is something that has always inspired me throughout my career at Sunderland and will continue to inspire the team. Thank you.”

The announcement came as a surprise to everyone outside of the Stadium of Light. There had been calls for the popular midfielder to be made captain next season. Cattermole had been at the club for a decade and a testimonial had been rumoured.

Almost Every Emotion Experienced at Sunderland

Signed for £6 million by Steve Bruce in 2009, the former Middlesbrough and Wigan Athletic player soon became a favourite amongst fans. His combative style and passion were amongst the characteristics that fans loved. He was also a very underrated player.

Cattermole experienced the heartache of two relegations and the relief, plus joy, of several great relegation escapes. He also played three times at Wembley for the Black Cats. Unfortunately, he would be on the losing side on each occasion.

He leaves having played 233 games for the club.

What Next for Lee Cattermole?

As yet, it is unknown what the future holds for Cattermole. However, there are likely to be several interested clubs wanting his style and experience. It is unlikely that he will be without a club for long.

What Next for Sunderland?

The Black Cats have lost an influential player. Not just on the pitch but off it too. At League One level, Cattermole, on his day, is one of the best in the division. A positive way to look at today’s announcement is that his departure could give others in the squad a chance to shine.
