Denver Hume has delighted Sunderland and their fans by signing a new contract. The full-back’s previous deal was due to come to an end this summer. The Black Cats were desperate to hang on to one of their hottest prospects and he has now committed himself to the club. Hume’s new deal runs until 2021.

Denver Hume Signs New Contract

Exciting Prospect

Academy graduate Hume has been at Sunderland since 2007, coming through the ranks. The 20-year-old has made his mark on the first-team this season with a string of excellent displays. The left-back, who can also play on the right side of defence, is seen as a very exciting prospect by fans and those within the club.

Pushing to be a Regular

Hume made his debut at the end of last season. However, during this campaign under Jack Ross, the full-back has pushed to be a regular. Sadly, Hume, after experiencing first-team football, suffered an injury that has kept him out for a large part of the season. Still, he has managed ten appearances and impressed each time.

Manager Jack Ross has been impressed with the youngster and is delighted he has committed himself to the club: “Denver’s progression over the course of the campaign has impressed all of us, so I’m delighted that he has committed his future to the club. From day one of pre-season, he has worked hard and bought into what we are trying to do, and after missing a sizeable amount of the season due to a frustrating injury, he deserves immense credit for fighting his way back into contention. I believe he can play an important role for this football club moving forward.”

Delighted to be Staying

Hume advised that he is delighted to be staying at the club where he has been for a large part of his life: “I’m really happy to sign a new contract at the club. I have absolutely loved my time here and it’s been a massive part of my life for 12 years, so to have the opportunity to continue playing my football here is something I won’t take for granted. The manager and his staff have been brilliant with me and now everything’s signed, I can’t wait to kick on and play as many games as I can to help take the club back where it belongs.”

Could Follow in Others’ Footsteps

20-year-old Hume is one of several exciting prospects at the Stadium of Light. The club’s academy has produced some excellent players over the years, most notably England internationals Jordan Henderson and Jordan Pickford. Hume is highly thought of, and if he continues to progress and learn, he could be the next young star on Wearside that begins to attract attention from Premier Leagues big boys.

Sunderland and their supporters however, will be hoping the club can climb back to the top tier of English football and keep the likes of Hume. Time will tell. For now, they have a player desperate to do well and cement his place as a first-team regular.
