Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady Deserves International Recall

The performances of Sunderland’s Aiden McGeady have impressed many, including Eire boss Mick McCarthy. Is an international recall around the corner?
Aiden McGeady

Like most of Sunderland’s squad last term, Aiden McGeady endured a tough time, despite being one of the few consistent performers. However, since his return to the side after injury, and working with new manager Jack Ross, McGeady has been one of the Black Cats’ top performers. He has produced the type of form not seen for a number of seasons. If the Glasgow-born Irish international keeps producing, then it is only a matter of time before the Republic of Ireland coming calling again.

Aiden McGeady Deserves International Recall

Sunderland’s current Player of the Month is currently enjoying some of his best form for years. He was also nominated for the League One Player of the Month award. For a player who did not start a first-team game until October, the winger has already scored six goals. He has also contributed four assists. His exceptional form has led many to say that he is far too good for League One. An international recall could be just around the corner. If it is, it will be deserved.

Recall on the Way?

New Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has admitted recently that he has already had 92-cap McGeady watched. “I had somebody watch Aiden play for Sunderland on the weekend and he’s flying.”

McGeady’s last appearance was a year ago during Ireland’s play-off defeat to Denmark. However, even at 32, the winger may get another chance to impress on the international scene. Many Irish fans have been frustrated by the former Celtic stars’ inconsistent performances over the years but it appears McCarthy could be willing to give him another opportunity.

Jack Ross Delighted

Sunderland manager Jack Ross has been full of praise of McGeady since he came to the club in the summer: “He is a very talented footballer, but I have known that first hand. I see him every day in training and I can’t speak highly enough of his attitude and how he has responded to everything we have asked him to do. He is working really hard out of possession and then when he gets the ball he has the ability to create something out of nothing”.

McGeady is also delighting fans with his form. Their song about him can be heard regularly at home and away matches. The wing wizard appears to be enjoying his football again, something which didn’t happen enough last season under Simon Grayson and Chris Coleman.

The quality he possesses is currently on display on a regular occurrence these days. If they continue he will prove to be one of, if not the best player in League One. If this proves to be the case, then McGeady won’t be stuck on 92 international caps for too much longer.
