You Can’t Doubt David Luiz’s Ability After Performance Against Manchester City

David Luiz

David Luiz answered his critics on Saturday by putting in a stellar performance against Manchester City. Having been left out of the side for Wednesday’s defeat at Wolves, the Brazilian international showed Chelsea fans he’s far from finished at Stamford Bridge.

You Can’t Doubt David Luiz‘s Ability After Performance Against Manchester City

The much-maligned Brazilian showed fight, passion and desire. He looked revitalised following recent criticism of his wayward showing at Wembley against Tottenham.

He was simply everywhere, putting in a shift at both ends of the field. Timely interceptions, a presence in the air, dealing with everything City had to throw at Chelsea. It was a sublime performance, one you would expect from a top centre-back.

The way in which he snuffed out a Leroy Sane chance before drawing the foul was the David Luiz that Blues fans haven’t seen often enough. Defensively, this was probably his best performance since that magical night in Munich. Not forgetting that evening he played 120 minutes, having returned to training, days earlier, following a hamstring injury.

The other side of his game was also evident. The former Benfica man’s timely looping headed goal gave Chelsea some breathing space. It was only his first of the season, but not the first time he has been on the scoresheet in an important fixture. He also showed his range of passing ability with aplomb.

A Future at The Bridge

Luiz has been looking as if his time at Stamford Bridge was going to come to a swift end, with his contract due to expire next summer. Poor form hasn’t helped the cause, but more performances like the weekend could yet see a prolonged stay for the former Paris Saint-Germain defender.

One problem that could affect the Brazilian’s future in West London is Chelsea’s contract policy. Players over the age of 30 are usually only offered short-term deals. Luiz, who turns 32 in April, may feel he wants one last big bumper payday before thinking of retirement.

For now, Luiz has a wonderful chance to continue to prove the doubters wrong, and just maybe leave Stamford Bridge by adding to his impressive collection of winners medals.
