Captain George Honeyman, a Chris Maguire goal of the month contender and an Aiden McGeady strike sealed a 3-0 victory for Sunderland over Southend United. A professional performance saw the Black Cats comfortably secure the three points against their visitors. The victory takes Sunderland onto 32 points, three points behind leaders Portsmouth, with a game in hand.

A Chris Maguire Rocket Helps Sunderland Win

Five Wins in a Row

This victory brought Sunderland’s fifth victory in a row. Confidence is growing with each game and teams will struggle to keep the Black Cats at bay, especially at the Stadium of Light. Today, they were backed by another 30,000+ crowd, and although teams may see this as their cup final, they will also have the nerves that go with such an occasion.

Not at Their Best

Sunderland were not at their best today but they didn’t need to be. Although Southend battled and created several chances, the hosts were on top for the majority of the game, scoring three good goals in the process.

Sunderland went into half-time with a 1-0 lead thanks to captain George Honeyman. A well-worked move was finished off by Honeyman’s glancing header which followed a good cross from Lynden Gooch.

Chris Maguire Scores a Stunner

The visitors came out from the break looking bright on the counter-attack and searching for an equaliser. However, they didn’t take into account what Sunderland, and in particular, Chris Maguire, can do going forward.

Fan favourite Maguire produced a moment of magic as he picked the ball up around 40 yards from goal, advanced forward and unleashed an unstoppable shot into the top corner. The current ‘king’ of the Stadium of Light, as some fans are calling him, was at the heart of many of the hosts’ attacks and deserved his goal. He has recently received September’s Goal of the Month award and he could be about to receive October’s.

McGeady Nets Number Three

Sunderland’s third and final goal came courtesy of Irish international Aiden McGeady. Josh Maja did well to set up his team-mate, who fired the ball across the Southend goal and into the corner of the net, extending Sunderland’s lead and giving supporters another very good goal to celebrate.

Sunderland Juggernaut Gathering Pace

Sunderland manager Jack Ross and the new owners have built a team that is growing in confidence with every game. Goals are frequent and now clean sheets are also coming. They are currently third in the league and, if they win their game in hand, they could go top, if they aren’t already there by then that is.

Jack Ross

Jack Ross must take credit for building this team into promotion contenders and bringing in players that want to play for the club and have ambition. Although Sunderland are currently in the third tier of English football, fans are enjoying the journey which they, and everyone connected to the club, will hopefully see promotion and an eventual return to the Premier League where they belong.
