Harry Kane made a welcome return to Tottenham Hotspur’s first-team squad last week in the 1-1 draw at rivals Arsenal. Having been out with injury since 18th September and with Tottenham in a worrying slump of form and in desperate need of goals, the return of their talisman was much needed.
Harry Kane Back to Boost Spurs
Kane scored what seems to be his obligatory goal against Arsenal in recent times. And he lasted for approximately 70 minutes before Pochettino substituted him for a well-earned rest. His match fitness needs to improve, but it’s only a matter of time before he’ll be back to his best.
With another international break in the offing, however, Kane’s call-up to the England squad was both worrying for his club but also welcome in as much as he could secure some playing time. Aggravating an injury was the biggest concern, and it is therefore a further boost that the England interim manager, Gareth Southgate, has taken a practical approach to using Kane in this international period.
Kane Sent Home by England
With the international qualifier against Scotland comfortably set aside by England, and with only a friendly against Spain to come, Southgate figured it was in Kane’s best interest to return home.
With Pochettino’s disgruntlement at the way the national team had used a still not fully fit Danny Rose at the last break, England were not going to upset the applecart a second time. Southgate cited Kane’s need for a different training regime at this stage of his recovery as the reason for ending his inclusion in the England training camp.
More than a Striker
For Spurs, Harry Kane at this moment in time is more than just a striker. He epitomises much that the club has been portraying in its play over the last couple of seasons. The team was visibly lifted with his inclusion at The Emirates and even with some injuries to other key players, Spurs played with more purpose.
There were clear improvements to the play of Christian Eriksen for one. A player who had not been performing anywhere near his optimum level suddenly raised his game, as did much of the team following some lacklustre performances in previous weeks.
So with Kane returning to his club today, Spurs fans will be hoping that under the watchful eye of Mauricio Pochettino, he will continue his progress to full fitness and be ready for the next league game against West Ham next Saturday; the second of three London derbies scheduled for this month. And with it, they will hope that the period of attacking sterility is soon replaced by the free-flowing, free-scoring football that they had previously been experiencing. Kane will be the catalyst for that.
