Andre of Wolves

Wolves Show Statement of Intent By Tying Down Brazilian International André

There was an expectation among many Wolverhampton Wanderers supporters that relegation from the Premier League would trigger a player exodus. Players such as João Gomes and André were all viewed as likely departures following the club’s drop into the Championship. Instead, Wolves have delivered a major statement of intent by securing André on a new long-term contract until 2030, with the option of a further year.

The Brazilian midfielder committing his future to the club changes the narrative surrounding Wolves’ rebuild under head coach Rob Edwards. Rather than preparing for another cycle of heavy departures and uncertainty, Wolves are building around one of their most important players.

André’s Long-term Commitment Offers Wolves Hope of an Immediate Premier League Return

André’s Importance to Wolves

Since arriving from Fluminense in August 2024, André has quickly become one of the most influential players at Molineux. The 24-year-old has already made 74 appearances in Old Gold and established himself as the heartbeat of Wolves’ midfield.

Even during a difficult campaign, which ultimately ended in relegation, André has remained one of the club’s most reliable performers. His composure on the ball, positional awareness, and defensive work allowed Wolves to remain competitive in matches when they were often under pressure.

According to Fotmob, this season André managed 374 defensive contributions, 78 tackles, and 206 recoveries, as well as making over 55% sucessful dribbles. While not the most attack-minded player, he certainly keeps the engine running in the midfield.

Fans recognised his consistency throughout his debut season in English football, voting him Player of the Month twice as Wolves battled to survive in the Premier League. His dramatic stoppage-time winner against the reigning champions Liverpool in March also highlighted his growing influence in key moments.

Statistically, André ranked among Wolves’ strongest midfield performers for ball recoveries, interceptions and passing accuracy over the past two seasons. More importantly, he brought balance to the side. His ability to shield the defence while progressing the ball in possession made him indispensable in both phases of play. The midfielder’s rise has also continued on the international stage.

Since moving to the West Midlands, André has earned eight caps for the Brazil national team, underlining the calibre of player Wolves have managed to retain

A Huge Boost for Wolves’ Championship Ambition

Keeping André may prove just as significant as any new signing Wolves make this summer. Championship promotion races are often decided by experience, consistency and mentality, and André offers all three. Rob Edwards described the midfielder as “a dream to work with” and emphasised his growing leadership qualities. That leadership could become vital in a physically demanding Championship campaign where standards and mentality will be tested every week.

Just as importantly, André’s decision to stay sends a powerful message throughout the squad. That message is that Wolves are not preparing for a long-term rebuild; they are aiming for an immediate return to the Premier League. Executive chairman Nathan Shi called the contract extension “a huge statement of intent for the future,” and it is difficult to disagree.

Keeping a Brazilian international in the Championship is rare, particularly one who would undoubtedly have attracted Premier League interest following relegation.

For the fans who were fearing a complete dismantling of the squad, André’s new deal represents something far more encouraging: belief. Wolves have secured a player capable of dominating Championship midfields, setting standards in the dressing room and helping drive the club back towards the Premier League at the first attempt.
