Three Memorable Oxford United Wins at Fratton Park

Oxford United have faced Portsmouth more than any other team in the Football League but victories at Fratton Park haven’t come all too often.

In fact, the U’s have managed 24 wins against the south coast club but only four of those victories came on the road.

There have been some decent stalemates at Fratton Park; a 1-1 draw in the League One playoff semi-final first leg and Matty Taylor’s late equaliser in front of the travelling fans, but not many wins.

Here are three of those victories as Matt Bloomfield’s side look to secure a vital three points against their relegation rivals.

Three Memorable Oxford United Wins at Fratton Park

0-1 – January 23, 2016

Jordan Bowery came off the bench and scored on his debut as Oxford edged past their League Two promotion rivals at Fratton Park.

Liam Sercombe had earlier missed a penalty but Michael Appleton’s side picked up a vital three points on the way to gaining promotion to the third tier that season.

1-4 – August 3, 2013

The first meeting between the sides in 15 years saw Oxford pick up a win on the opening day of the season in emphatic style.

It was a pivotal day for the south coast club, which had begun life as a fan-owned entity following a successful takeover.

Pompey took the league in front of a League Two record attendance crowd but goals from Deane Smalley and Alfie Potter turned the game in Oxford’s favour.

And the duo added further goals in the second half to give Chris Wilder’s side an opening-day victory.

0-2 – November 29, 1975

Having lost in all seven of their previous trips to Fratton Park, Oxford picked up all three points on their eighth attempt.

However, Pompey had lost their previous seven games and sat bottom of the second tier ahead of this fixture, with the U’s just two places above them after a similarly slow start. Both clubs would go down that campaign but it was Oxford’s first victory at Fratton Park.
