Chelsea vs Arsenal: Three of the Best Premier League Games at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea vs Arsenal: Three of the Best Premier League Games at Stamford Bridge

On November 30, at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea vs Arsenal will take centre stage in the 16:30 kick-off live on Sky Sports. These two have had many memorable clashes over the years, across many different competitions. Here are the three most memorable Chelsea vs Arsenal Premier League meetings at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea vs Arsenal: 3 memorable Premier League clashes at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea 2-3 Arsenal – October 1999

One of the most dramatic Chelsea vs Arsenal fixtures, and still remembered by both sets of supporters. Chelsea were seemingly in control, thanks to goals from Tore Andre Flo and Dan Petrescu, before Nwankwo Kanu took over.

Kanu made it 2-1 in the 75th minute, before levelling the game soon after. And in swamp-like conditions, Kanu chased down a clearance and rounded Ed de Goey in the Chelsea goal, before curling in a shot from the byline to complete his hat-trick and an unlikely comeback for the Gunners.

Chelsea 3-5 Arsenal – October 2011

A Chelsea vs Arsenal goalfest occurred in 2011, with the Gunners running out 5-3 winners at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea grabbed the lead, courtesy of Frank Lampard, before Dutch striker Robin van Persie levelled the score. A John Terry goal was cancelled out by an equaliser from Andre Santos.

Theo Walcott and Juan Mata traded goals to leave it at 3-3, before a defensive slip from Terry saw Van Persie saunter clear to put the Gunners in front before sealing his hat-trick at the end of the game.

My vivid memory of this game is Andre Villas-Boas looking lost on the touchline as Arsenal waltzed through his defence with ease, as the game progressed.

Chelsea 6-0 Arsenal – March 2014

Heading to Stamford Bridge in March 2014, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger would have been determined to be victorious in his 1000th game as Arsenal manager against his old rival, Jose Mourinho.

It was a disastrous start for Arsenal, with early goals from Samuel Eto’o and Andre Schurrle giving Chelsea a 2-0 lead. Kieran Gibbs was then incorrectly sent off in a case of mistaken identity following Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s handball. A sending off that led to calls for VAR to be introduced.

Chelsea continued to dominate and goals from Eden Hazard, two from Oscar, and a goal from Mohamed Salah sealed a brilliant win for Mourinho’s team. Wenger couldn’t control his frustration and was involved in a touchline exchange with the Chelsea manager. A 6-0 loss for Wenger in his 1000th game presented a bitter pill to swallow.
