Manchester City predicted lineup - Pep Guardiola readies substitutes

Manchester City Predicted Lineup vs Wolves For May 2

This is the predicted lineup for Manchester City’s Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The match sees City, the team in second place in the form table, face the only side who have picked up more points than them over their last five games, though Wolves have only played sides below them in the table during that time.

How Manchester City Have Lined Up Recently

Stefan Ortega Moreno has started each of City’s last three games after a recurrence of the groin injury which has plagued Ederson all season. But, the Brazilian was back on the bench for City’s FA Cup semi-final victory against Nottingham Forest.

Pep Guardiola has seemingly settled on his first-choice back four since the international break and he opted to play this quartet against Forest.

It comprised Matheus Nunes and Nico O’Reilly as right-back and left-back respectively with the central defensive duo being Ruben Dias, who captained City at Wembley, and Josko Gvardiol.

What makes Guardiola’s defensive selection even more interesting is the fact that he opted to play Rico Lewis in midfield whilst keeping Nunes on the right of the defence. The England international came in to replace Ilkay Gundogan where he was partnered by Matteo Kovacic and Bernardo Silva.

Brazilian wonderkid Savinho started on the right wing in place of James McAtee, who did not even make the bench for the semi-final. Omar Marmoush retained his place on the left. Club captain Kevin de Bruyne dropped to the bench as Jack Grealish was given a rare start as a false nine.

Manchester City’s Recent Form and Tactics

Guardiola has found a settled system which compensates for the absence of Erling Haaland in recent weeks.

It utilises what is essentially a diamond midfield, with De Bruyne or Grealish operating slightly further forward as a false nine, and it allows Marmoush and City’s other attacker a large amount of freedom to drift inside, and into a more traditional strikers’ position, or stay slightly wider.

A marked improvement in performances from Nunes combined with the breakout of O’Reilly and the consistency of Gvardiol and Dias has allowed the Catalan to name a consistent back four. They have yet to concede a goal from open play as a unit.

Since the March international break, City have gathered a lot of momentum, giving them the potential to end a difficult campaign on a high. They have won six of their seven games in all competitions which has seen them advance to their third consecutive FA Cup final and climb into fourth place in the Premier League.

Manchester City Injuries to Consider

Phil Foden made his first City appearance since the Manchester derby in the FA Cup semi-final which means both he and Manuel Akanji have fully re-entered the first-team fray.

James McAtee was not in the Citizens’ matchday squad at Wembley, but there has been no indication as to whether this was injury-related.

In his pre-match news conference, Guardiola confirmed that both Erling Haaland and Rodri were back in first-team training. However, Friday’s game will come too soon for the Norwegian and the reigning Ballon d’Or winner is even further away from a return to first-team action.

Surprisingly, the Catalan has not been asked about the injury status of Oscar Bobb after his international manager confirmed that he had picked up a minor injury.

Centre-backs John Stones and Nathan Ake are still unavailable.
