‘Unfortunately He Had a Problem’: Chelsea Reveal Bitter Injury Update for £58 Million Midfielder

Chelsea are aiming to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they host rivals Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge on Thursday (3 April). However, ahead of the game, an unfortunate little update has crept up on Romeo Lavia.

Chelsea Confirm New Romeo Lavia Injury

What Did Enzo Maresca Say About Lavia?

The Belgian midfielder has struggled for minutes with the Blues in the 2024/25 season because of his struggles to stay healthy. Lavia has now suffered another minor injury in Chelsea’s recent training session, which will rule him out of the derby against Spurs.

Enzo Maresca confirmed the midfielder’s injury blow ahead of the match, as he stated: “He was doing better in terms of progress, but unfortunately one day ago he had again a small problem. So we’re going to see in the next hours.” This ends up leaving the London side a bit short-staffed in midfield and could cause Maresca to keep playing captain Reece James in a new midfield position if need be.

This blow will, however, be particularly damning for Lavia considering that he made a return from injury in the 1-0 loss to Arsenal before the March (international break) and now faces another spell on the treatment table.

Romeo Lavia’s Injury Nightmare Continues

The 21-year-old midfielder has really struggled to get his career at Stamford Bridge going properly because of his struggles with injuries. He has only been restricted to 13 appearances in the 2024/25 term, which includes seven starts, but he hasn’t been able to complete 90 minutes in a single match in this campaign. He started for the Blues in their 4-3 win over Spurs earlier this season, but was taken off at halftime.

Since joining Chelsea from Southampton in 2023 for a reported fee of £58 million, the midfielder has struggled with a number of injuries. He has already missed over 60 matches for the Blues because of injuries, which includes almost the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign. Lavia has only been restricted to 14 appearances for Chelsea in almost two seasons and could see himself falling down the midfield pecking order unless able to maintain his fitness levels and consistently perform for Maresca’s side.
