Manchester United are still looking to hit top speed under the guidance of new head coach Ruben Amorim, who keeps chopping and changing his team to find the best combination. Amid all the the drama with their on-pitch antics, their co-owner, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made an interesting advance in the ownership structure.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe Strengthens His Position As Manchester United Co-Owner
What Did Sir Jim Do?
The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell has reported that the British Billionnaire has now transferred his ownership stakes at Manchester United to his petrochemical company INEOS. It’s claimed that he had initially purchased the 25 per cent stake in the Red Devils’ ownership structure in Christmas Eve, 2024 through the company ‘Trawlers Ltd’, which he solely owned.

The Athletic adds that: “A new filing to the SEC (U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission) reveals the 73-year-old on December 18 shifted those shares to INEOS, which is co-owned by Ratcliffe, Andy Currie and John Reece. The trio have collective voting and investment power of over the shares held by INEOS, the filing states.”
It’s also stated that Ratcliffe has invested a further £79 million into the club, which has allowed him to increase the percentage of his ownership stake in Manchester United from 27.7 per cent to 28.94 per cent now.
Will Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Changes Impact His Role At United?
The Athletic adds that this switch-up in the 73-year-old businessman transferring his ownership stake of the club from Trawlers Ltd to INEOS will not impact his position as the club’s co-owner. It’s noted that he still owns 60% of INEOS’ ownership and that allows him to keep calling the shots in the upper-management structure at Old Trafford as well.

Ratcliffe has rung in many changes since becoming a co-owner at Manchester United in late 2024. He approved the appointment of Ruben Amorim as Erik ten Hag’s replacement after the Dutchman was sacked. The 73-year-old has also made some surprising cut-throat decisions like cancelling the Manchester United staff Christmas party in 2024 and reducing the Administrative Staff’s £100 Christmas bonus to a £40 voucher. With Ratcliffe now holding a bigger ownership stake at Old Trafford, he has more control in making key decisions within the club and decide how it operates on and off the pitch.
