Mastantuono became the youngest goalscorer in River Plate history when he scored his first senior goal against Excursionistas in February. Having trained with the first team since the pre-season, he has now fully integrated into Martín Demichelis’ side.

The Azul-born youngster has enjoyed a similar development path as Claudio Echeverri, who was signed by Manchester City in January. Both midfielders have consistently played above their age groups, attracting interest from a number of elite European sides.

With an exceptional ability to engage in quick transitions coupled with impressive passing skills, Mastantuono’s playing style has drawn comparisons as “River Plate’s new Phil Foden”.

Speaking after scoring his record-breaking goal in February, the 16-year-old said of his love for River Plate: “Every time I score a goal, I kiss the club’s badge. It was the club that put food on my table when I was a kid.”

However, he might soon leave his childhood club behind to pursue a senior career in Europe.

Premier League Interest

According to Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto, Chelsea have joined Real Madrid in the race to sign Mastantuono. However, the Argentine wonderkid is leaning toward joining Real Madrid instead of continuing his career in the Premier League.

Fabrizio Romano has previously claimed that Real Madrid haven’t yet made an official bid for Mastantuono, adding that “almost all top European clubs” are interested in the midfielder.

Real Madrid’s recent track record of signing South American youngsters makes Santiago Bernabeu the most likely destination for the young attacker. However, it won’t be surprising to see more European clubs inquiring about the Chelsea-linked starlet in the coming months.
