He adds that De Gea is waiting for the perfect opportunity to restart his career after being released by the Manchester club, who ended up signing Andre Onana as his replacement. Romano also claims that it’s not clear if Newcastle’s stance on signing the Spaniard will change – but they will make the final decision – on whether to sign a new goalkeeper in the next few weeks.

It wouldn’t be a bad decision for Newcastle United to make a move for De Gea, knowing everything he has achieved in his career in the Premier League. However, De Gea would probably need to settle for a secondary role in Eddie Howe’s squad because Pope is the undisputed no.1 at the club. The Spaniard, who was hailed as “fantastic” last season, can be signed at any time by the Magpies due to his free agent role, but it remains to be seen if the Magpies take things forward with their interest in him.
