Are Newcastle Really Interested in Phillips?

After the England international was linked to a move to the Magpies and Everton, Fabrizio Romano has clarified his situation with the defending Premier League champions. He reports that there have not been any “concrete talks” between any parties over a possible January move for Phillips.

The journalist also adds the 27-year-old personally wanted to stay with Pep Guardiola’s side despite receiving some approaches over a possible summer move from a different club. Phillips is still focused on doing his very best for Manchester City, and a “decision will be made” over his future later on, possibly in the November or December period.

When it comes to Newcastle’s stance over signing the English midfielder, Romano wrote: “Newcastle won’t decide anything on transfer targets before they know what happens in their Champions League group.” With the Magpies now in a good position to actually make it to the Champions League knockout stages after their recent win over PSG, it remains to be seen if they make a move for a midfielder like Phillips in the winter if able to get into the knockout stages.

What Is Phillips’ Current Situation?

Ever since joining Manchester City from Leeds United last year, the 27-year-old’s career has failed to soar in the matter that he had imagined. He has struggled to get regular minutes, only playing in 12 Premier League games last season. In this campaign, the Englishman has made five appearances, but only started that one game against Newcastle in the Carabao Cup.

Despite being used scarcely by Pep Guardiola, Phillips seems to be determined for now to earn a more prominent role in his squad. However, if he continues to be given such little playing time, then the 27-year-old, hailed for his “outrageous” passing ability earlier this year, might be looking for an exit next year.
