According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have started planning for future transfer windows and have identified the position they want to strengthen. The centre-back spot is one of the areas the club wants to improve, and they have already identified their top targets for the position.
Manchester United Will Invest in Improving Defence
Centre-Back Situation at United
According to Romano, United officials have already started discussing internally their plans to improve the team’s defence. The Red Devils are looking to bring in a big-name signing to reinforce the heart of the defence either in the January transfer window or in the summer of 2024. It will be the position where United make their “next top signing” according to the journalist.
Benjamin Pavard and Jean-Clair Todibo were the two names on the club’s radar this summer. However, both the deals did not come to fruition because the 20-time Premier League champions failed to offload Harry Maguire. The English defender was close to joining West Ham, but the deal collapsed in the final stages. Pavard has since then moved to Inter Milan and is no longer a possibility for the English club. Todibo still remains on the club’s list according to Romano.
Who Are the Top Targets for United?
Romano revealed on his social media the players discussed by the Old Trafford hierarchy to improve the defence. Todibo remains a top target, with the young defender impressing with his performances for Nice. The Italian journalist suggested that, although the club is actively discussing the prospect of bringing in a central defender, it heavily depends on the potential departure of Maguire.
Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba is another name “appreciated” by the three-time Champions League winners, as revealed by the transfer market expert. The “monster” defender recently signed a contract extension with the Bundesliga club, which could be a hurdle in their pursuit of the player. Antonio Silva of Benfica is another name on the list for United. The 19-year-old centre-back seems to have impressed the club’s scouts and is one of the players considered.
