Manchester United star Antony has been absent from the squad since the September international break due to alleged assault allegations from a former partner of the Brazil international. The 23-year-old was dropped from the national team squad and has been attempting to clear his name in the aftermath of the allegations.
Man United’s Antony Returns to Address Allegations
Investigation Underway as United’s Antony Flies Back to England
According to Mark Critchley of the Athletic, the winger has returned to England from Brazil and will meet Greater Manchester Police over the allegations. The same source indicates that Antony was spoken to by police in Sao Paulo but has been granted permission to fly back to Manchester.
Gabriela Cavallin, the alleged victim and former partner of United’s Antony, spoke publicly for the first time on these assault allegations in an interview in June 2023. He has denied all accusations and has vowed to clear his name. Cavallin claims that the violence started in June 2022 while she was pregnant. There have been further allegations from two women in Brazil, which Antony has also denied.
Man United’s Agreement with £85 Million Signing
The most expensive signing of the Erik ten Hag era to date scored eight goals in 44 appearances for the club in the 2022/23 campaign. The number 21 right winger had started all four games of the Premier League season before the club officially announced on September 10 that it had: “agreed with Antony that he will delay his return until further notice in order to address the allegations.”
This is one of several off-field issues Ten Hag has had to deal with since his appointment as the United manager. It does not appear that this is one of the cases that may be resolved quickly, leaving Antony unavailable for selection as part of the United squad for the foreseeable future.
