According to Fabrizio Romano, VfL Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven has caught the eye of Ange Postecoglou and is the latest addition to his list of targets for the summer. He joins fellow defender Edmond Tapsoba on the list. It’s clear that the new Tottenham Hotspur manager is exploring multiple options in hopes to bring in the best defender to suit the style of play he will bring to the North London team.

The Strengths of Micky van de Ven

The former FC Volendam man boasts a number of quality attributes, but one that separates him from other defenders is his outstanding speed. Matching the likes of Randal Kolo Muani and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, the centre-back clocked a speed of 35.97 km/h: the 9th fastest of any player in the Bundesliga this season. This speed would have also been the quickest among Premier League central defenders this campaign: beating Brentford man Kristoffer Ajer’s speed of 35.53 km/hr.

Van de Ven also possesses remarkable dependability for his age. At only 22 years old, he started in 35 out of 36 games in all competitions this term. Simultaneously, he led the team in tackles while completing 90.85% of his passes: 9th-best in all of the Bundesliga.

The Cream of the Crop

Although he has yet to make his first-team international debut for the Netherlands, he has been called upon several times in other competitions. In fact, he is currently representing his country in the U21 tournament. This might draw his attention away from the speculation surrounding him, but depending on how well he performs, it could have an impact on his transfer value.

Having already been linked with Liverpool and Manchester City, it seems that the Australian boss will have stiff competition for the defender’s signature. We know he wants a move out of Germany, but it will take a lot for the North London team to convince him to go there as opposed to other top clubs in England.
