Injuries to Harrison Biggins and Charlie Lakin Sees Doncaster Dip Into Free Agent Market

Zain Westbrooke’s arrival in South Yorkshire follows injuries to key midfielder Harrison Biggins and January loan signing Charlie Lakin.

Rovers will also likely be without top goalscorer George Miller for the remainder of the campaign after he and Biggins were forced off in a 3-1 away loss at Salford City.

Doncaster sit 12th in League Two after Tuesday night’s 1-1 draw at Crawley Town, falling out of the playoff picture recently.

Westbrooke has made just three appearances this season but may be required to step straight in for Rovers, who host Northampton Town tomorrow.

He scored four goals for both former clubs Coventry City and Bristol Rovers, assisting nine for the latter and five for the former.

The 26-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan in League Two with Stevenage, playing 12 games for the club.

New signing Westbrooke told the club website: “I’m really pleased. I got the chance to train with the team and meet the staff and I felt very welcomed by everyone and felt really comfortable.

“I’ve been a free agent since January and when I got the call to come in, it was something I couldn’t turn down. I came to earn the contract and thankfully I’ve been able to do that.”

Rovers head coach Danny Schofield added: “We have suffered injuries to two key players in Harrison Biggins and Charlie Lakin, who will both miss the rest of the season, so we were short of cover in that area of the pitch.

“Zain became available to us as a free agent and he has trained with a few clubs recently so his fitness levels are good.

“We’ve brought in a player with a good amount of experience at League One level and it’s an opportunity for him to come in and impact our squad.”

Westbrooke has been given the number 24 shirt at the Eco-Power Stadium.
