Newcastle United Close In On ‘Future Star’ Winger as Everton Continue Dramatic Collapse

Target for Newcastle United Anthony Gordon playing for Everton

After staying at Goodison Park in the summer, a Newcastle United Anthony Gordon move is looking increasingly likely, according to The Telegraph. The young winger has been described as a “future star” by Danny Murphy and could look to ply his trade away from an Everton side that are lying near the bottom of the league without a manager.

What Could a Newcastle United Anthony Gordon Move Look Like?

In their article, The Telegraph reported that Newcastle United made a bid of £35 million for Gordon over the summer. However, the Toffees rebuffed this offer, as they did with offers from Chelsea. After losing Chris Wood to Nottingham Forest, a move for Anthony Gordon bolsters the side’s attacking ranks. Both clubs are some distance apart in their valuations, but the Magpies believe that Everton are willing to sell for the right price.

Over the summer, the Merseyside club’s asking price for the forward was as high as £60 million. After a relatively poor season this sum is likely to come down, but Goodison Park leadership could try to hold on to the player throughout a difficult relegation scrap.

What Role Will Anthony Gordon Play?

Anthony Gordon is a highly versatile forward for Everton. He plays both on the wing and at centre-forward, albeit with far less luck than when he finds himself out on the flanks. As players like Allan Saint-Maximin take a less prominent role at St James’ Park, the English youth international could find himself developing into the starting lineup of one of Europe’s emerging powerhouses.

What is Happening at Everton?

Everton is a club in deep trouble. After sacking their manager Frank Lampard and losing out on Arnaut Danjuma to Tottenham Hotspur, the club are scrambling for recruits both on the pitch and off it. Whilst Anthony Gordon will likely raise a huge fee, losing such a pivotal player could see the club plunge into the Championship for the first time in almost seventy years.
