Manchester United are set to make a massive £43.1 million bid for Cody Gakpo at the start of the January transfer window. This report comes from the reliable Jason Burt of The Telegraph, who also claims that this offer will be around £9 million higher than PSV Eindhoven’s asking price for the young striker last summer. Burt also says that Gakpo is keen to work under Erik ten Hag and that the Dutch manager wants to bring the youngster to Old Trafford.

United in Need of a Striker; Cody Gakpo the Perfect Option

The Red Devils are in desperate need of a striker and there is no denying it.

Heading into the campaign, their options up top looked pretty promising, with last year’s top scorer Cristiano Ronaldo alongside Anthony Martial as two high-profile players whom Erik ten Hag could call upon at striker. Not only this, but having broken into the senior side as a central attacker, Marcus Rashford was more than capable of providing additional depth there.

Despite this, whether Ronaldo was doing more harm than good for the Manchester giants was up for debate, and Martial’s injury record was cause for concern. As the season progressed, it became clear that Ten Hag’s team functioned better without Ronaldo, but as Martial continued to struggle for fitness, there was a rather important gap to be filled.

With Ronaldo’s contract now having been terminated as a result of his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, Ten Hag’s only natural striker is, for now, too injury-prone to be relied upon.

Fresh off an impressive World Cup campaign, Gakpo is the perfect man to fill this void. He scored three goals in five games for his national side on the biggest stage of all, and also has an impressive 21 direct goal involvements in just 14 league appearances for PSV this season. His clinical finishing resembles that of United legend and now PSV coach Ruud van Nistelrooy, and with this being something United have long been crying out for, Gakpo could be the perfect striker signing for Erik ten Hag
