Benfica Make €100 Million Demand for Liverpool Target

Liverpool Target

Liverpool target Darwin Nunez will cost them €100 million, the Merseyside club have been told, according to The Times’ Paul Joyce.

With Sadio Mane’s future at Anfield in question, Liverpool are seeking a quality addition to their front line and Darwin Nunez certainly fits the bill.

Nunez Said to Be Keen on Liverpool Move

Paul Joyce also reports that Nunez would be keen on moving to Anfield and playing under Jurgen Klopp’s management. Klopp recently signed a contract extension and will be looking to continue Liverpool’s success, all be it likely without Senegal forward Sadio Mane.

Nunez is a proven goalscorer – something Liverpool have seen first hand in their Champions League clash with Benfica just months ago. The 22-year-old scored in both legs against Liverpool, taking his European goal tally to six in 10 games.

In Portugal, he has scored 26 league goals in 28 games this season. Though, it wasn’t enough for Benfica to finish any higher than third.

It is expected the Uruguayan forward will leave the club this summer and likely for a big fee. He recently changed representation to so-called ‘superagent’ Jorge Mendes, who also represents Cristiano Ronaldo.

Liverpool aren’t the only club to target a move for Nunez, with Atletico Madrid, Manchester United and Newcastle United all linked.

The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell adds that Manchester United opened talks to sign him a while ago but are focused on signing a midfielder first.

Spanish club Almeria are set to receive 20% of any profit made by Benfica in Nunez’s sale. Benfica signed him for €24 million in 2020.

If Liverpool were to come up with the €100 million (around £85 million) for Nunez, he would surpass Virgil van Dijk as their record signing. Aware of Manchester United’s interest, Joyce adds that Liverpool will not be drawn into a bidding war for the forward.
