Major Update on Chelsea Preferred Bidder

Chelsea Preferred Bidder

According to BBC Sport, a consortium led by LA Dodgers owner Todd Boehly is set to be named as the preferred bidder for Chelsea as their ownership saga goes on.

Todd Boehly is expected to be named the preferred bidder with a consortium of others. Chelsea went up for sale after controversy surrounding owner Roman Abramovich. Abramovich stated it was in the club’s best interest to be sold. Other offers have been withdrawn, including the Ricketts family bid.

Todd Boehly is the current owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, a Major League Baseball team in the United States. Alongside him are Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, British businessman Jonathan Goldstein, American PR executive Barbara Charone, and British journalist Daniel Finkelstein according to the BBC. The bid was made early in the process with the offer reportedly around £2.5 billion.

What This Means For Chelsea

Chelsea will now likely have a new owner with thinner pockets. Chelsea has a renowned academy that can sustain them for a short time, but the long-term effects of an ownership switch could be costly to the transfer budget. With many players leaving this summer, like Antonio Rudiger, Chelsea will have to replace several key players. It is yet to be seen how the new ownership group will be able to back manager Thomas Tuchel in the transfer market.

On the bright side for Chelsea, this move could alleviate some of the backlash and allegations surrounding the club. It was an unprecedented move that was made, seizing Abramovich’s assets. The long-term effects of this move are still yet to be seen. The new ownership group will have the unfortunate task of following a polarizing owner. One who brought great success, but also great shame to Chelsea.
