The injuries at AC Milan continue to pile up. Star centre-back Fikayo Tomori went down early in the last match versus Genoa with a left knee injury. The club announced that Tomori went through key-hole surgery to repair the medial meniscus injury. The expected recovery time is estimated to be at 30 days.

What this means for the club

Milan is dealing with absences all over the pitch. The defence is depleted, whereas Franck Kessie and Ismael Bennacer are away at the African Cup of Nations.

Davide Calabria is nearing his return to play. This boosts a defence that already has Simon Kjaer out for the season. Tomori’s absence is crucial, however. Milan says the recovery will take roughly 30 days. This sounds about right, as Alessandro Florenzi underwent the same procedure this season and was back after 35 days.

This means that Milan is without its two starting centre-backs. Alessio Romagnoli is in and out of the squad as well with different issues. The healthy centre-back options are Pierre Kalulu and Matteo Gabbia. Both have talent and have done well thus far, but remain inexperienced.

Milan’s upcoming schedule during Tomori’s absence is tough as well. They play versus Spezia on Monday, but after that, the next two matches come versus Juventus and Inter Milan. These are Milan’s biggest rivals and present two matches that will be crucial in the Scudetto race.

A “positive” here is that it is the month of January. Milan has a little over two weeks to be able to bring in defensive reinforcements. They are already pondering ideas. The club was ready to make a move for a centre-back to fill Kjaer’s void, but now may be rushed into doing so with the Tomori news.

Not only is Tomori a starter, but he’s been arguably Milan’s top player this season. This one-month absence in an important stretch can be detrimental to the Rossoneri‘s season.
