After a tumultuous few months which culminated in Rafael Benitez dropping the Frenchman, Lucas Digne has asked to leave Everton. Benitez revealed the news in his latest press conference, before going on to say: “As a manager when you want to do the best for your club, you know sometimes it is against you.”
We are yet to find out where Digne’s future lies. One thing we do know, however, is that it won’t be at Goodison Park. So far, Chelsea and Newcastle United have been the two favourites for his signature, with Newcastle finally able to splash the cash, and Chelsea seeking a replacement for the injured Ben Chilwell.
According to Fabrizio Romano, despite the earlier reports, Newcastle are not an option for Digne. Chelsea, meanwhile, are interested, but are yet to open official talks.
Lucas Digne Asks to Leave Everton
What Next?
There is no denying Lucas Digne’s talent. The Frenchman is one of the best left-backs the Premier League has to offer, but it may just come down to who’s in the position to make a move. It is clear that Rafa Benitez does not have a place for him in the Everton line-up, and, therefore, the Toffees may accept a lower price than in previous times. The last thing Everton need right now is further disruption.
Benitez’s side have endured a season to forget so far, full of injuries and avoidable losses. As things stand, they sit as low as 15th, having won just once in their last 10 games in all competitions. With the arrivals of Nathan Patterson and Vitalii Mykolenko, however, they’ll be hoping to improve in the second-half of the campaign.
Mykolenko’s arrival, in particular, is an interesting one, and the biggest indicator yet that Digne’s time at Goodison Park is over.
