Martial Wants to Leave

The 26-year-old French forward has seen his game time limited this season and missed out on Ralf Rangnick’s first two matchday squads as interim manager through injury.

Failed Number Nine Role

Under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Manchester United elected to push Anthony Martial into becoming the club’s number nine. The pressure that role holds is very high and Martial never really took it in his stride. He didn’t really look at home in the position and often appeared to drift wide – where he seems to perform better.

Initially, Marcus Rashford was tried upfront but when that didn’t work out the onus was then put on Martial to take that chance, he didn’t.

Martial’s agent Philippe Lamboley told Sky Sports News: “Anthony wishes to leave the club in January.

“He just needs to play. He doesn’t want to stay in January and I will speak to the club soon.”

Martial was signed from Monaco in September 2015 and made a stunning first impression, scoring v Liverpool, a moment that left commentator Martin Tyler with yet another moment he called to be forever etched in history. You can still hear it: “ohhhh yessss, welcome to Manchester United, Anthony Martial.” A moment most Manchester United fans hold dearly and will never forget.

However, Martial’s time at the club since has been largely inconsistent. Still, he remains a popular figure, but it might be best for all to see him go and thrive elsewhere. It’s been seen time and time again how leaving clubs like United can lead to better things – look at Jesse Lingard’s short stint with West Ham United as the most recent example.
