Fresh Terms for Phil Foden

Foden is expected to sign a new deal with Manchester City, despite the 21-year-old’s current contract expiring in the summer of 2024.

The Athletic’s report does not specify details of the deal – most likely due to the contract not yet in its final stage – but it is believed there is little to stop the midfielder from signing a new long-term deal on fresh terms.

Stunning Rise of the Manchester City Midfielder

There is little surprise that Manchester City want to tie Foden down for the future. He has experienced a stunning rise in the last few years since critics suggested Pep Guardiola should let the young English midfielder leave the Etihad Stadium on loan.

However, Guardiola kept the youngster around to coach him. Foden’s patience paid off when he eventually broke into the side on a regular basis in 2019/20. His rise as an international star was confirmed when Gareth Southgate picked him to be one of his main attackers at the Euro 2020.

As a result, his position has changed from needing to break through City’s and England’s star-studded attackers to becoming one. Foden’s performance against Liverpool on October 3, 2021, displayed the talent at City’s disposal.

In addition, Foden showed his versatility when Southgate opted to play him in central midfield against Andorra on October 9, 2021. While the level of opposition must be acknowledged, the decision paid dividends when Foden continuously coordinated England’s attack and became a fundamental reason for how England broke down Andorra’s low-block defence.

Foden made 28 appearances for Machester City last season and he was involved in 14 goals – scoring nine and assisting five. This was an improvement from his previous season’s tally of 23 appearances, five goals and two assists.

He also played four matches at the European Championship in the summer, assisting two.
