Bayern Munich have stepped up their pursuit of German centre-back Matthias Ginter, according to Christian Falk, after initially deciding to wait until next summer, when he would be a free agent.

Matthias Ginter Attracting Interest From Bayern Munich

Deal for This Summer

Ginter’s current deal at Borrusia Mönchengladbach will run out next summer. He joined the club in 2017 following, three years at Dortmund, where he made 102 appearances and won the DFB Pokal.

The 27-year-old was part of the squad in Germany’s victorious 2014 FIFA World Cup squad, although he did not play a minute. It was the same story in 2018, when he ended up as a non-playing member. He did, however, play in the 2017 Confederations Cup, which Germany won. He also started every game at Euro 2020 as part of a back three.

Ginter has made 149 appearances for the club, scoring 10 times. The centre-back has been linked to a number of clubs in the past, including Chelsea. Bayern lost David Alaba and Jerome Boateng this summer, but have signed Dayot Upamecano from Leipzig on a free transfer. Julian Nagelsmann, who also joined from Leipzig, is their new manager, and he is a proponent of a formation with three centre-backs. Matthias Ginter was pencilled in as a free transfer for next summer, but Bayern appear to have changed their mind, and will try to sign him this summer.

From Gladbach’s perspective, they would prefer to get a fee for the German rather than lose him for free.

Transfer Could Happen

Niklas Sule and Dayot Upamecano have played every game this season so far, with Tanguy Nianzou or Josip Stanisic joining them as back-up options. The arrival of Ginter would strengthen a group that has lost two experienced centre-backs. Ginter brings quality and experience to the table. He has played against some of the best sides in the Champions League, and has been part of four international tournament squads.

Julian Nagelsmann has the job of trying to succeed on the European stage this season. That is where there are still question marks over him. He needs to replenish Bayern’s defence, and a move for Ginter looks like a good option.
