Erik Lamela and Bryan Gil are both left-footed wingers. Lamela prefers to play on the right, however, while Gil predominantly plays on the left.

Lamela, 29, joined Tottenham Hotspur in the aftermath of Gareth Bale’s world record exit in 2013. Across eight injury-affected years and over 250 appearances across competitions, Lamela scored 37 times and set up a further 47. He scored just 17 Premier League goals, compared to 19 Serie A goals during his two-year stint in the Italian capital.

The Argentina international won the 2020/21 Premier League Goal of the Season award. His rabona flick arrived in the first-half of the North London derby against Arsenal. He was part of the Argentina squad that finished runners-up in the 2015 and 2016 editions of the Copa America, but was not included in the squad for the 2021 edition.

20-year old Bryan Gil, a product of the Sevilla academy, made his La Liga debut for the club in the 2018/19 season. The following season, he joined Leganes on loan. He did not play as much as he would have wanted, making just 12 appearances in the league. Memorably, though, his only goal that season came on the final day of the season in a 2-2 draw against Real Madrid.

In 2020/21, he joined Eibar on loan alongside teammate Alejandro Pozo. He played 28 times, scoring four goals, but could not prevent the Basque side’s relegation. Gil made his international debut for Spain this year, in qualification matches for the 2022 World Cup. He came on as a substitute for Sergio Canales in the 64th minute of a 1-1 draw against Greece.

Deal Close to Completion

The deal between the two sides is close to being completed. Gil has a €50 million release clause in his contract, but Sevilla are amenable to acceptation for about half of that due to the inclusion of Lamela.

Lamela will sign a three-year contract with Sevilla, who will match the salary specifications of his current Spurs contract. This ends his eight-year association with the club. He was an unused substitute in both the 2019 Champions League final and last season’s EFL Cup final. He leaves without having won any silverware.

Gil, who will feature for Spain’s Olympic side later this month, will meanwhile get his big move after impressing last season. In spite of Eibar’s relegation, the forward caught the eye with his energetic performances. Tottenham are yet to make a signing under new manager Nuno Espirito Santo. Gil may yet be the first new arrival.
