Arsenal to Make Bid for Aaron Ramsdale After Euro 2020

Aaron Ramsdale

Arsenal are expected to submit a bid for Sheffield United goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale, according to James Shield of the Sheffield Star. Ramsdale is currently on international duty with England at Euro 2020, after Dean Henderson was forced to withdraw with injury. Arsenal will wait until after the competition to submit a formal offer.

The Details of Arsenal’s Bid for Ramsdale

Arsenal reportedly see Ramsdale as a potential successor to Bernd Leno, the current number one at Arsenal. Ramsdale recently stated that he has no interest in leaving Sheffield United, despite suffering relegation last season. He was one of the few players to impress in a dismal campaign for the Blades. The 23-year-old made 146 saves, only bettered by England colleague Sam Johnstone.

Sheffield United only bought Ramsdale last season, for £18.5 million from Bournemouth. United are insisting that Ramsdale is now worth £40 million, despite their relegation to the Championship. Should Arsenal follow through on their interest, it will be hard for Sheffield United to keep Ramsdale at Bramall Lane.

Why Aaron Ramsdale?

While it may seem strange to pursue a keeper who has suffered back-to-back relegations, that is an unfair reflection on Ramsdale’s quality. He is just 23 -years-old, an age still considered young for a keeper. He is also a superb shot-stopper: No keeper has made more saves than Ramsdale over the course of the last two seasons. However, he does have a mistake in him, making three errors leading to goals over the same period

Considering he is likely to play second-fiddle to Leno, there are likely more suitable options out there. Mat Ryan spent the second-half of last season on loan at Arsenal, and could yet secure a second spell at the club. In addition, Ajax’s Andre Onana continues to be linked with a move, despite in the midst of his doping ban.

Plenty of Arrivals at the Emirates

Arsenal seem to be cracking on with their transfer activity, much to the delight of their fans. Fabrizio Romano reports that Albert Sambi Lokonga and Nuno Tavares will both sign soon. They also seem to be getting closer and closer to signing Ben White from Brighton. David Ornstein of The Athletic suggests the England defender is close to finalising a £50 million move.
