Long-Running Saga

Manchester United have been trying to sign Sancho since last summer. They chased his signature for the entirety of the summer transfer window. The deal did not happen eventually. Dortmund demanded £120 million for the winger, and United were unwilling to match their demands.

This season, their asking price has dropped. Even then, United have not matched that amount. Their £67 million bid was rejected by Dortmund. They raised their offer to around €85 million, but that wasn’t enough either.

However, Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein have both reported that agreement is closer than ever. The gap between the two sides’ valuations has reduced significantly and the deal could finally happen. The deal is not completed or signed yet, but negotiations are progressing well.

Sancho, who is with the England squad at the Euros, has already reportedly agreed personal terms. In fact, the agreement between Sancho and Manchester United has been in place for some time now. A product of the Manchester City academy, Sancho left in 2017 to join Dortmund. He has scored 50 times in 137 appearances across all competitions. He scored twice in the final of the 2020/21 DFB Pokal as Dortmund beat RB Leipzig 4-1.

This is a long-running saga that dates back to when Manchester United were first linked to Sancho in 2017. After last year’s miss, fans were concerned about United’s inability to close deals, particularly with Chelsea and Manchester United both spending big. The deal is finally moving to conclusion now. The length of negotiations will not bother fans if he ultimately arrives. He is set to return to Manchester now, only for the rivals of his boyhood club.

Lingard Future Connected to Jadon Sancho Transfer

Sancho’s deal is likely to impact where Jesse Lingard will play next season. The England international had a poor run of form at Old Trafford. He joined West Ham United on loan in January 2021. There was an immediate uplift in form for the attacking midfielder. He scored nine times in 16 appearances in the second half of the season. His performances helped West Ham qualify for the 2021/22 Europa League. It also earned Lingard a place in England’s 33-man preliminary squad for Euro 2020.

David Moyes wants to keep Lingard next season. It could be another loan, or a permanent transfer. That could depend on Sancho, however. Manchester United are widely expected to complete the Sancho deal. However, if that falls through, Lingard may stay. Lingard’s preference is to stay at Old Trafford, but Sancho’s arrival would leave him further down the pecking order.

Any deal for Lingard’s London return will be done after Euro 2020.
