After a less than satisfying 2020/21 Premier League season for Everton, it still came as a shock when Carlo Ancelotti left for Real Madrid. Director of Football at Goodison Park, Marcel Brands, wants Graham Potter to replace the Italian, according to Patrick Boyland of The Atheltic.
Marcel Brands Wants Graham Potter to Replace Carlo Ancelotti
Numerous Names in the Frame
Everton are now trying to find yet another manager after Ancelotti’s departure, and Brands is said to hold Brighton and Hove Albions’ Graham Potter in high esteem. However, Bill Kenwright and Farhad Moshiri are said to prefer a bigger and more established name.
Interestingly, it has been the big names that have not delivered at Goodison Park, Ancelotti included. Ronald Koeman was a calculated disaster after he was brought in from Southampton, yet both he and Ancelotti will be facing each other in the 2021/22 El Classico.
Potter has not been disregarded by the others making decisions at Everton, but it is Brands who is especially keen to land the 46-year-old who’s playing style has caught the eye of many clubs including the also managerless Tottenham Hotspur.
Potter’s Shrewd Transfer Business
Everton fans have been underwhelmed by their dealings in the transfer market in recent seasons and that is another area where Potter holds appeal. He has not been a big spender at Brighton, but he has used his team of scouts to pick up lesser-known names who have been identified as being able to adapt to the Premier League, such as Leandro Trossard.
If Potter can come in and use that scouting network, and he will have more money at his disposal at Everton, then he could be the man to tick all of the boxes and take the Toffees forward to what ultimately is their main aim of breaking into the Premier League’s top four.
