Leicester City Confirm Wes Morgan’s Retirement

Leaving Leicester as a Modern Day Hero

The commanding centre-back joined the Foxes in January 2012 having made over 350 appearances for Nottingham Forest. Making a good first impression, Morgan played 17 times in what remained of the 2011-12 Championship campaign and was subsequently rewarded with captaincy for the following season.

The following year, Morgan played an integral role in Leicester’s promotion back to the Premier League. He made 45 appearances in that triumphant year and also chipped in with two goals.

Heroics of Survival and the 5000-1 Premier League Title

The Foxes finished their first season back in the Premier League in 14th position, with a run of 22 points from their last nine games eliminating any relegation worries – another season where Morgan played a starring role.

Taking that form into the 2015-16 campaign, and playing every single minute of the 38 games, Leicester historically won the Premier League. Leicester’s 5000-1 title win remains one of, but if not the best achievement in Premier League history, with Morgan becoming the first Jamaican to achieve top tier glory.

Morgan’s More Recent Years

Remaining a critical part of Leicester’s squad in the next two seasons, two ninth-placed finishes followed, but by the 2018/19 campaign, Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire’s newly formed partnership confined the 34-year-old to spend a lot of time on the bench.

Over the last two seasons, Morgan has made a mere 14 appearances as Leicester continue to consistently break into the top six. His ability and experience means he is an excellent character to have around the dressing room, but it is now time for the 37-year-old to head for pastures new.
