Establishing the Midfield

At 29, a four-year contract may appear too long. However, for a player of De Bruyne’s class and standard, the extension helps City create an established base for their midfield.

The Belgian has been one of the key players in Pep Guardiola’s midfield over the last few years. He has grown in quality under the Spaniard, becoming one of the best midfielder’s in the world.

The 29-year-old has set the standard since his first season with the club. De Bruyne registered 16 goals and 12 assists as City finished fourth in the Premier League.

Consistency has been key in allowing De Bruyne to enjoy huge amounts of success at the Etihad Stadium. Despite Guardiola’s side finishing second in the Premier League and exiting the Champions League at the quarter-finals, De Bruyne enjoyed the best season of his careering, scoring 16 times and laying on 22 goals for his team-mates.

As a result, it was vitally important that City extended the Belgian’s contract. He will offer stability and leadership in a City that is likely to go through a transition over the next two years. As well as this, there is no doubt that he will continue to offer huge swathes of quality and creativity.

“Since joining City in 2015, I have felt at home. I love the fans, my family are settled here in Manchester and my own game has developed really well.

“This football club is geared for success. It offers me everything I need to maximise my performance, so signing this contract was a straightforward decision.

“I am playing the best football of my career and I honestly feel there is more to come.

“Pep and I see football in the same way. Having that relationship with a manager is so important to me because our objectives are totally aligned and we want the same things.
