Experienced Midfielder Joins the Exiles

The addition of Joe Ledley is a welcome boost for Newport County manager Michael Flynn. The 34-year-old brings a wealth of experience with him to Rodney Parade as the Exiles continue their push for promotion from League Two.

Capped 77 times by Wales, Ledley arrives following a short spell in Australia with the Newcastle Jets, a move which came following a short spell at Charlton Athletic.

Ledley began his career with his hometown club, Cardiff City, where he surpassed 250 appearances for the Bluebirds and reached an FA Cup final. After six seasons in South Wales, Ledley moved to Celtic, where he won three league titles and won Scottish Cup.

The combative midfielder then joined Crystal Palace in the Premier League and spent three-and-a-half seasons at Selhurst Park, reaching another FA Cup final, before spells in the Championship with Derby County and Charlton.

What Was Said

Speaking to the club’s official website, Ledley said: “It’s a privilege to be here. I was here last January training with the team and the chairman and manager both welcomed me, so to come back and repay them for what they did for me is remarkable. It’s been great what the team have done so far and we want to can carry that on now.

“I’ve got a lot of experience and been towards the top end of tables a few times. It’s only a short contract but hopefully, we can get over the finish line.”

Flynn added: “It’s great to have Joe on board because he has trained with us previously and was close to joining us last season. I understood why he went to play out in Australia because it was a brilliant opportunity for him, but I’m glad that he’s finally signed for us now.

“I think he will have a big part to play on and off the pitch between now and the end of the season, and his experience will help us get where we want to be.”

The Exiles currently sit fifth in League Two but are only five points off the leaders, Cheltenham Town. Ledley could feature on Saturday when Newport welcome Leyton Orient at Rodney Parade.
