Edinson Cavani reportedly wants his Manchester United stay to be extended beyond the 2020/21 season. The Uruguayan’s contract runs out in four months time.

Cavani Wants United Contract Extension

Not Looking Elsewhere

According to Mike McGrath of the Telegraph Cavani wants an extra year under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He only signed a one year deal, as it wasn’t in either his or the club’s interests to tie him to a long-term contract.

There is, however, a one-year extension in the contract that Manchester United can trigger if they want. After the form Cavani has shown, it seems a foregone conclusion that Solskjaer will want to keep him around.

Because Cavani is in the last four months of his current deal, he is allowed to speak to other clubs regarding a move. It’s believed he has no interest in doing this and is already looking ahead to 2021/22.

Defying Expectations

Edinson Cavani took his time to get up to speed and settle down at Manchester United, but now he’s placed himself firmly ahead of Anthony Martial in the pecking order.

The 34-year-old signed as a free agent on deadline day last summer, and many viewed it as a panic buy from United. Signing an ageing striker on deadline day doesn’t suggest much thought and planning went into the deal.

Whilst that criticism is probably fair, Cavani has shown he can still deliver the goods at 34. The former Paris Saint Germain forward has scored six goals in 17 Premier League appearances, as well as registering two assists.

The numbers are arguably secondary when it comes to Cavani’s impact at United. When he’s playing down the middle, the entire United attack looks more settled and organised. Everyone’s positions are more clear and defined.

When the likes of Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood get their head up and look to cross, they know exactly where Cavani will be. His presence has also been a factor in Luke Shaw’s impressive form. His crosses from left-back are being converted regularly by Cavani.

With both player and club seemingly in agreement on the issue, it won’t be long until the extension is made official.
