Kirsty Hanson has signed a new contract with Manchester United Women.

The 22-year-old Scottish forward has extended her stay at Leigh Sports Village until June 2024.

Manchester United have also included an option to add a further year.

Hanson Signs New Long-Term Deal

Squad Member Since Day One

Hanson joined Manchester United Women for their inaugural FA Women’s Championship campaign. Leaving Doncaster Rovers Belles for a return to United – where she had spent her early years within the famous Centre of Excellence.

The Scotland international – capped four times – has remained consistent throughout her time at Manchester United. She usually features on the right-hand side of a front three and has contributed to three goals and one assist in the league so far this season, as she did in the previous campaign.

In total, Hanson has scored 11 goals in 57 appearances for Manchester United Women. She had a particularly good start to the season, scoring a brace and providing an assist in United’s 5-2 win over Birmingham City Women. Hanson’s other goal contribution this campaign was a late equaliser in the Manchester derby – a 2-2 draw with Manchester City Women.

Hanson offers Casey Stoney a consistent outlet should she be needed and with Tobin Heath out injured, the Manchester United boss will no doubt turn to the Scot as the club embark on a title challenge in the latter stages of the season.

Manchester United Sitting Pretty

Having been formed in 2018, Manchester United Women have developed fast and well. In February 2021, they have earnt the right to be considered title challengers and are very much on the cusp of qualifying for the Women’s Champions League – should all continue to go well.

Being a young player, with experience at the club as a girl, Hanson enhances the United tradition embodied from the men’s side – of bringing through their own – something Casey Stoney has been keen to do.

Dream Come True

Kirsty Hanson told the Manchester United website: “This club means so much to me; I have grown up as a United fan, played in the girls’ academy, and I’m now part of the senior side competing in one of the most competitive leagues in the women’s game, which is a dream come true.

“It makes me proud seeing the way we have developed over the last few years and I am so happy to be signing a new contract. I feel like I’m improving as a player every single day and that is down to the environment here.

“We as players push each other constantly and Casey and the staff have given me the confidence and belief to express myself on the pitch, I am really excited to continue my journey here and I know we can achieve some big things in the future.”

Stoney Pleased by Hanson Attitude

Casey Stoney said: “I’m so happy Kirsty has committed her future to the club, she is a fantastic player and character to have in our environment. Her work ethic is incredible and she is very much a student of the game.

“She is constantly looking to improve which, as a head coach, is always pleasing to see. Her strong performances at club level have resulted in regular call-ups with the senior Scotland team which I know is something she is extremely proud of, so long may that continue during her time with us too.

“The future is bright for Kirsty and I am looking forward to continuing our work with her for many years to come.”

United host Reading Women on Sunday (February 7, 2021) afternoon. They will look to further the pressure on Chelsea Women at the top of the table – on goal difference, with a game in hand – and remain above City and Arsenal Women, who are third and fourth in the FA Women’s Super League, respectively.
