Aston Villa Defender Frederic Guilbert Joins Strasbourg on Loan

Aston Villa defender Frederic Guilbert has joined Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on loan for the rest of the season.

The French full-back has fallen out of favour at Villa Park this season, meaning his game time has been very limited.

He is Strasbourg’s first signing of this transfer window as the Ligue 1 side look to bolster their squad.

Guilbert Has Not Made a Premier League Appearance This Season

The French full-back has been with the Villa for the last 18 months. He was a regular during the 2019/20 season, making 25 Premier League appearances as Villa secured their Premier League status. However, the Frenchman has fallen down the pecking order this season.

Guilbert hasn’t featured in the Premier League with the experienced Ahmed Elmohamady the preferred back up option to first-choice Matty Cash. The Frenchman has been limited to cup matches this campaign and he is desperate to play.

Guilbert made his name in French football with SM Caen before moving to Villa two years ago. He was seen as one of the best full-backs in French football. However, he has struggled in England despite building a good relationship with the fans.

Uncertain Future

Dean Smith sending him out on loan is a sign that his long term future may be away from Villa Park. It appears a return to France suits all parties involved especially Strasbourg.

Thierry Laurey’s side are having an excellent 2021 and Guilbert is an excellent addition to their squad. He will provide competition at right-wing-back for Kenny Lala and can play on the left if required. Strasbourg’s five-back setup may suit Guilbert and he will be hoping to impress.

Guilbert was linked with other sides including Nantes but Strasbourg won the race for the 26-year-old. He could make his Strasbourg debut on Wednesday against Brest. A game both sides will fancy they can secure victory from.
