Arsenal Confirm Departure of Mesut Ozil to Fenerbahce

Mesut Ozil

Mesut Ozil has completed his long-awaited move away from Arsenal, with the Gunners confirming that the midfielder has joined Fenerbahce.

While the Turkish club were very open in their pursuit of the former Germany international, posting pictures and updates of the medical and signing process on social media, this is Arsenal’s first real communication related to the move.

The club’s record signing leaves having made over 250 appearances with over 100 goal contributions, but without having played so far this season.

Arsenal Confirm Departure of Mesut Ozil

‘Amazing Journey’ Comes to an End

Ozil joined the club back in 2013 from Spanish giants Real Madrid and made an instant impact at the club. He did what he did best – assist – on his debut and finished his first season in North London with an FA Cup final triumph against Hull City.

Also in the earlier part of his Arsenal career, Ozil won a further two FA Cups and was named as the club’s Player of the Season for the 2015/16 campaign.

After signing a lucrative new deal, though, things started to fall away, and the German has been very much in and out of Arsenal’s plans for the last few seasons.

Despite making a total of 18 league appearances last term, none of them came after football’s resumption from the Covid-19 stoppage, meaning he has not played for the club for close to a year now.

In a statement on Arsenal’s website, Ozil said: “I’d like to thank the club for this amazing journey over the past seven-and-a-half years. The support I have felt from the team and fans during my time here has been truly incredible and something I will always be grateful for.

“Together we won trophies for the first time in years and created memories that will last a lifetime. The Arsenal fans will forever remain in my heart. I’d like to thank Edu Gaspar for helping bring about a professional and dignified solution in the past few days, and I wish everyone at the club the best in their attempt to continue to bring Arsenal back to the top, where we belong.”
