Torino in Talks With Tottenham Hotspur Over Loan Deal for Gedson Fernandes

Torino have emerged as a potential destination for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Gedson Fernandes, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Gedson Fernandes Has Struggled at Tottenham

The 22-year-old only joined Spurs on an 18-month loan deal with an option to buy from Benfica last January, but the Portuguese has struggled to make an impact on Jose Mourinho’s team.

Since his arrival, Fernandes has made just 14 appearances in all competitions for Spurs and the only time he completed 90 minutes came in the FA Cup third-round tie away to Marine.

The 22-year-old hasn’t featured for Mourinho this season in the Premier League and has been named as a substitute in just three of their 19 league matches. However, he has been unused in all three games.

Gedson has fallen in behind in the pecking order at Spurs with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Moussa Sissoko, Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and Harry Winks all ahead of him. Dele Alli is another Tottenham midfielder fighting for his place but looks destined to depart.

Return to Benfica and Torino Loan

As a result, Spurs are willing to allow Fernandes to return to his parent club, Benfica, before heading to Italy to join Torino on loan.

Fernandes still has six months remaining on his current deal and the likelihood of Spurs exercising the option to buy clause seems highly unlikely. It appears the North London side are willing to cut their losses before loaning him out to Italy and free up some further funds and squad space before the transfer window closes.

The move could be beneficial for the 22-year-old as he seeks regular game time. Although it seems unlikely he will remain at Tottenham next season, the Portuguese will be looking to improve ahead of a permanent return to Portugal.
