Mike te Wierik Set to Leave Derby County After Just Six Months at the Club

Derby County defender Mike te Wierik is on the verge of leaving the club.

According to The Athletic’s Ryan Conway, te Wierik is set to return to Dutch football after a disappointing six months in England.

Te Wierik is set to re-join former club Groningen after agreeing a multi-year contract with the club he captained before joining Derby during the summer transfer window.

Mike te Wierik Set For Derby County Exit

The Defender is Pushing to End Disappointing Spell in England

The centre back has struggled in the Championship since joining the club in the summer. He joined Derby on a pre-contract agreement which was signed in February last year.

However, injuries, a change of management and a struggle to adapt have culminated in te Wierik wanting an exit from Pride Park. The defender has made just four league appearances for Derby, the last of which was a draw with Bournemouth at the end of October.

The impending exit of te Wierik will provide much-needed funds for Derby. The Rams are facing a severe financial crisis with their takeover still not completed. Players wages haven’t been paid on time and the club are now open to selling academy products and some first-team stars.

Te Wierik is likely to leave alongside Duane Holmes and Jack Marriott. All three will provide the funds Derby are desperate to generate until their protracted takeover is completed.

Move Back to Holland

The departure of Philipp Cocu and appointment of Wayne Rooney has led to te Wierik falling further down the pecking order. He is set to re-join former club Groningen.

He was an icon and a leader at Groningen during his first spell and now he will be hoping to have the same effect this time around. Te Wierik will join a Groningen side flying high in the Eredivisie. The Dutch club have a real shot at securing European football after an excellent first half of the season which sees them sit in the Eredivisie top six.
