Talented Midfielder Johnson Arrives From Southampton

Tyreke Johnson has become the Gills first singing of the January transfer window following his arrival from Southampton. The 22-year-old came through the ranks on the south coast and has made three appearances for the senior side.

The midfielder has made just under 100 appearances at youth level for the Saints, where he has scored an impressive 18 goals from midfield.

This will be Johnson’s third loan spell, having impressed National League side Woking before a stint in the US at Hartford Athletic. He scored four goals across both loan spells.

What Was Said

Gills boss Steve Evans has been a fan of Johnson for some time and was delighted to get the deal done. Speaking to the clubs’ official website, he said: “We are delighted to have signed Ty on loan; he is an exciting prospect and I have no doubt he will fit in well with our current group.

“He is very quick, direct, hungry, and will cause defences a lot of problems in our division. Our intention is to make this deal permanent which will give us more flexibility in the loan market over the next few weeks.”

Johnson Will be Looking to Push the Gills up the Table

It has been a hit and miss season so far for Gillingham. Evans’ side made a bright start to the season. However, in recent weeks, Gills have lost four of their last five games and have dropped to 14 in the League One table.

Gillingham welcome bottom club Burton Albion on Saturday in what will be Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s first game since returning to the Pirelli Stadium.
