Tottenham Hotspur Fine Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso for Breaching Lockdown Rules

Tottenham Hotspur have responded to breaches of Covid-19 rules by reportedly fining Sergio Reguilon, Erik Lamela and Giovani Lo Celso.

The issue relates to a gathering on Christmas day during which the two players attended a party atLo Celso’s home and, in doing so, contravened the ban on tier four households from mixing.

Tottenham Hotspur Condemn the Players

In a statement, Tottenham were outraged by the reaction of their players, saying: “We strongly condemn this image as we know the sacrifices everybody around the country made to stay safe over the festive period. The rules are clear; there are no exceptions. We regularly remind our players and staff about the latest protocols and their responsibilities to adhere and set an example. The matter will be dealt with internally.”

The breach was also picked up by the Metropolitan Police who came out with a strong reaction. A spokesperson for the police force said: “We remind all Londoners that it is up to all of us to make the right choices in order to slow the spread of the virus.”

Players Issue Apology

In response to the incident, Erik Lamela issued an apology via Twitter: “I want to apologise for a decision I made over Christmas which I deeply regret. On reflection, I understand the seriousness of my actions and the impact it has on others. I am truly thankful to everyone working hard to keep us safe, and I feel ashamed knowing I’ve let people down.”

Lo Celso followed suit with a similar response: “I want to apologise to everyone — I understand the great sacrifices people are making to keep themselves and loved ones safe, and the frustration you have expressed towards me is justified.”
