Liverpool are one of several clubs targeting a move for Bayern Munich defender David Alaba, according to Fabrizio Romano.

However, the Reds are facing competition from Real Madrid, who are leading the race for the Austrian defender.

Out of Contract

The Munich defender is out of contract at the end of the season and is unlikely to commit to a new deal. While the German giants are keen to see him remain at the Allianz Arena, contract talks have already broken down.

As a result, Alaba is on the radar of several clubs across Europe. The 28-year-old was linked with Chelsea earlier the season, but it now seems that Liverpool are also in the race for his signature.

Jurgen Klopp’s is still planning to sign a centre-back in the summer instead of in the January window, despite their lack of depth. Jordan Henderson and Fabinho played occupied the central roles in their 1-0 defeat to Southampton, and that could remain a consistent theme for the rest of the season due to injuries.

Alaba’s quality would certainly be a welcome addition at Anfield. The Austrian has moved into a central role recently in his career and would be a world-class partner for Virgil van Dijk next season. He likes to press high and bring the ball out of defence, which would suit the system that the Reds operate with.

However, persuading him to come to Anfield may prove to be tough. According to Romano, Madrid are leading the way for his signature, while the Austrian himself also wants to play at the Santiago Bernabeu. Furthermore, talks are reportedly underway and progressing.

As a result, Jurgen Klopp may have to turn his attention elsewhere and look further down his list of targets.
