Versatile Veteran

Across his career, Halford has covered pretty much every position on the pitch. Predominantly a right-footed centre-back that can also play at right-back, he is also played in midfield and up-front.

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a number of stints with several different clubs. He began his career with Colchester United, making a total of 163 appearances across a five-year period.

Halford’s third season with United saw him return his best goal record in a single season. he scored nine goals in 53 appearances, as Colchester finished 15th in League One.

The defender’s career has also seen him take in the Premier League. He made his debut in the top-flight with Reading, but has also enjoyed periods with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Sunderland.

He last played for Aberdeen in 2019, making just two appearances.

What Was Said?

Speaking to the official Southend United website about his move, Halford said: “I’m delighted. It’s been a long time since I played the game so I’m really looking forward to getting some games under my belt and showing that I can still do it.

“First of all, from a selfish point of view, it’s minutes, games and just playing football but in the grand scheme of things it’s about helping the manager out, helping the team out and we’ll see where it goes after that.”

Halford has been training with the squad, and is learning quickly about his team-mates.

“I came down and watched the game on Saturday and you could see Macca [Alan McCormack] pretty much coaching everyone on the pitch, winning the tactical free kicks and slowing the game down,” he said.
