Elliot Anderson Joins Senior Setup at Newcastle United

Newcastle United have awarded promising youngster Elliot Anderson with a new long-term contract.

The 18-year-old, who was an unused substitute in a League Cup tie at Newport County earlier this season, has been promoted to the senior squad on a permanent basis.

At 17-years-old, Anderson penned his first professional deal with the Magpies, but the club have extended his current deal with the midfielder having just turned 18.

The central midfielder, who is a Scotland U19 international, has been with the club since the age of eight and is one for the future, insists manager Steve Bruce.

Speaking after their cup tie at Newport back in September, Bruce said: “He’s done very, very well. We’ve got a few knocks, so we decided to reward him by putting him on the bench. In another game, he might’ve come on. He’s another one with a bright future.”

Bruce has got a reasonable reputation with giving youngsters game time at St. James’ Park, including the Longstaff brothers, Sean and Matthew.

Anderson Reacts

Speaking about the news, the 18-year-old was equally delighted to be tied down to his boyhood club.

He said: “It’s a year on from my first one and when I got told that they were going to offer me a new contract, I was buzzing.

“I didn’t really expect it but it makes you want to keep pushing on and see that rewards are given here.

“It helps you keep going and I’m really pleased.”

The youngster will be hoping to follow in his grandfather’s footsteps. Geoff Allen played as a winger for Newcastle during the 1960s and was part of the squad which won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup at the end of the decade in 1969.

He has had a bright start to the Premier League 2 season, scoring once from the opening two games.
