Peter Schmeichel Urges at Active January Transfer Window at Manchester United

Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has urged the club to be active during the January transfer window, reports Manchester Evening News. United have started the season poorly, increasing the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his position at the club.

Manchester United Urged by Peter Schmeichel to Be More Active This Forthcoming Transfer Window

Poor Start to the Season Means Recruits Are Needed

The 13-time Premier League champions find themselves in an atypical 15th position after 6 games. Their 1-0 loss to Arsenal last weekend was their third defeat of the season, in a performance where United lacked any sort of attacking threat.

Some would argue that despite not landing Jadon Sancho, United had a respectable window. As well as Edinson Cavani, the club brought Donny Van de Beek and Alex Telles in from Ajax and Porto respectively. The latter addressed the  persistent left-back problem that had loomed over United for a while. Whilst, the signing of 23-year-old Van de Beek increased the competition in more central positions.

In terms of the January transfer window, it is difficult to pinpoint a certain position in which United will be targeting. The Red Devils have a comparatively large Premier League squad and a subsequent high wage bill, which could hinder their approach this forthcoming window.

Too Much Time Spent on Jadon Sancho

United’s summer revolved around Sancho and dominated the headlines for months. However, a deal was never struck and all the efforts and time spent chasing the young Englishman were seemingly wasted. It remains unforeseen whether United will reignite their interest in the Borussia Dortmund star come January, but they will be looking to avoid the past mistake of spending the whole window in pursuit.

The lack of progress in the Sancho deal meant that late on in the window, United had to turn their attentions elsewhere. Ivan Perisic and Douglas Costa are names that have been associated with the club for years, with these rumours resurfacing as the club started to panic. The end product resulted in the signing of Cavani from PSG. Despite being a rushed and pressurised decision, the Uruguayan has been at the top level for a number of years, proving to be a scorer of lots of goals season after season.

Peter Schmeichel Calls for Manchester United to Be Active This January Transfer Window

Speaking to BeIN Sports, Schmeichel called for further work in the January transfer window: “They are inconsistent. Make no mistake, this is still a team in transition and a developing team. They still need to bring new players in.

“It was very hard to see what we were trying to do. We’re still trying to recover from the 27 years of one manager [Sir Alex Ferguson] and finding a new identity.

The United treble-winner also laid responsibility on the current squad: “I think some of the big players need to improve. There are a few players in there that are recovering from a lot of unwanted media attention. A few big players are under pressure from external things, like Maguire and Greenwood. You have to be happy, the camp has to be happy, to challenge for titles.”
