REPORT: Premier League Set to Continue Despite Potential National Lockdown

Reports emerged overnight that a second lockdown may be imminently imposed on the United Kingdom as Coronavirus cases start to rise again. This has naturally made the continuation of the Premier League a large concern for many, but The Athletic have reported that England’s top flight will continue in spite of these new restrictions.

Premier League Will Carry On If United Kingdom Enters Second Lockdown

First Time Around

As Coronavirus cases started to surge in mid March, many started to panic. At the time we knew virtually nothing about the virus and its affect on people, nor did we have any tested way to treat it.

This then led to a mass lockdown globally, which saw almost all sport leagues shut down. Of course, the Premier League was one of these.

The top flight of English football was suspended for just over three months, before Project Restart saw the competition return on June 19th, with games played behind closed doors.

Although the matches were not the same without the crowd, fans were still delighted that the beautiful game could continue.

 What Will Happen This Time?

Now that we know more about the virus and how we can best slow its spread, more measured actions will be taken.

One MP said “The virus doesn’t spread well in outdoor settings and the close contact time in sports like football is very short.

“The Department for Culture, Media and Sport seem keen to keep outdoor sport going at all levels.”

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters also weighed in earlier this month, saying that “We don’t feel the closed doors model is at risk at the moment.

“We think we’ve got a proven model that worked in Project Restart, and at the moment we’re happy, and so are government, that we can continue.”

Although the return of fans to stadiums is now unlikely for another few months, it is still reassuring that the Premier League is unlikely to shut down this time.
