REPORT: Manchester City Hoping for Pep Guardiola Renewal

City Pep

Manchester City are preparing for every eventuality if Pep Guardiola wants to leave the club according to James Ducker of the Telegraph.

The City hierarchy are confident that the 49-year-old will extend his contract at the Etihad. But, chief operating officer, Omar Berrada, said the club would have to look for Guardiola’s successor if he decides to leave.

Manchester City Will Search for Pep Guardiola Successor if New Contract Rejected

Manchester City Patient on Pep Guardiola

Searching for a potential replacement for Guardiola is only a contingency plan for City. His current contract expires in summer 2021 and City will remain patient over Guardiola’s decision.

Guardiola joined City in 2016. He is now in his fifth year at the Etihad. It is his longest stint in management following four years with Barcelona and three years at Bayern Munich.

Berrada: “He is Happy Being Here”

Despite slight concerns over Guardiola’s future at City, Berrada believes the 49-year-old is “comfortable” at the club. Berrada also explained his desire for Guardiola to stay at the Etihad.

Speaking to the Telegraph, Berrada said: “It speaks as to how far the club has come that Pep has done his longest managerial tenure with us. That means that he is happy being here. He is comfortable here. Pep is the best manager in the world and we want him to stay.

“We will have a conversation with him at the right time and hope he does extend his stay because his contribution has been enormous and will be long-lasting. Those conversations will happen at the right time but our position is very clear: we do want him to stay.

“If there was a sense that we would need to start planning for succession, then we will do so. But our priority is doing what we can and speaking to him to make sure he feels comfortable and that all the circumstances are right for him to continue.

“Our priority is Pep staying so if it requires a bit of time, it requires a bit of time, but we want him to stay.”

During his tenure, the club has won the Premier League twice and the FA Cup once. He also won three consecutive League Cup titles between 2017 and 2020.
